Even though the Stonewall Uprising 50 years ago inspired much positive change, reality continues to see LGBTQ individuals commit suicide, be murdered and suffer serious hate crimes. In response, on October 3, 2013, the Newark LGBTQ Community Center opened its doors. Our mission to create a safe space went into full gear. While incidents of violence against LGBTQ people have decreased, the need for the center to respond to situations when members have expressed feeling isolated, being bullied or violently attacked in the city of Newark has continued.
